Sheershanews editor arrested, placed on two-day remand
Dhaka: Editor of the online news portal Sheershanews and Sheersha Kagoj Md. Ekramul Haque was arrested early Sunday and then remanded for two days in connection with an extortion case.
Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Noor passed the remand order after police produced Ekramul Haque before the court with a plea for three days` remand.
Earlier, Ekramul Haque was taken to the court at about 1:20pm on Sunday.
Kalabangan thana police arrested him in connection with an extortion case at about 4:30am.
Kalabagan thana SI Shariful Islam told banglanews that Giasuddin Talukder, a businessman, filed an extortion case against Ekramul with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court on July 28.
Quoting the case statement, he said that Ekramul Haque’s men demanded Tk 20-lakh toll from Giasuddin Talukder on July 26. “They also beat the shop workers and gave death treat to them.”
According to the court direction, police personnel led by investigation officer of the case SI Atikur Rahman picked up Ekramul Haque from his Maghbazar residence.
Sheershanews reporter Abu Hanif Raja told banglanews that police tied Ekramul’s eyes with black cloth during the arrest.
Meanwhile, police “misbehaved” with Ekramul Haque’s family members, the Sheershanews reporter alleged.
